DIY Flower Arranging: 10 Tips from a Florist

You don't need a design degree (or expensive flowers) to make a stunning arrangement. These are the same simple principles we use every day โ€” and they'll instantly upgrade a grocery-store bunch.

1. Start with the right tools

Sharp snips or floral shears, a clean vase, and clear floral tape. That's it. Sharp cuts let stems drink; clean tools and vessels prevent the bacteria that wilt flowers early.

2. Build a tape grid

Crisscross thin strips of clear tape across the mouth of your vase to create a grid. Those little squares hold each stem in place so your arrangement keeps its shape instead of flopping to the sides. It's the number-one trick beginners are missing.

3. Lay your greenery foundation first

Greenery is the skeleton. Add eucalyptus, ruscus, or salal first to create structure and a natural shape โ€” then your flowers have something to nestle into.

4. Work in odd numbers

Three, five, seven. Odd-numbered groupings look more natural and less stiff than even, symmetrical ones. Cluster a few of the same bloom for impact rather than dotting them around evenly.

5. Choose a focal flower

Every arrangement needs a star โ€” a larger or bolder bloom like a rose, dahlia, or sunflower. Place your focal flowers first, then build around them with supporting blooms and filler.

6. Vary the height

Cut stems to different lengths so blooms sit at different depths. Flat, same-height arrangements look like a hedge; varied heights look like a garden.

7. Use the 1.5โ€“2x rule

As a starting point, make the arrangement about one-and-a-half to two times the height of the vase. Adjust to taste, but this proportion almost always feels balanced.

8. Add filler and texture last

Wispy fillers โ€” waxflower, gypsophila, astilbe, grasses โ€” fill gaps and add that airy, "just-picked" feel. Tuck them in at the end so they float above the main blooms.

9. Turn as you go

Rotate the vase while you work so the arrangement looks good from every angle, not just the front. Step back often.

10. Prep every stem to last

Strip leaves below the waterline, cut at a 45ยฐ angle, and add flower food. (Our full cut-flower care guide covers this in detail.)

Color made simple

Pick one of three easy palettes: monochrome (shades of one color), analogous (neighbors on the color wheel, like peach-pink-coral), or complementary (opposites, like purple and yellow). Add plenty of green to let the colors breathe.
